Nobody hands you a way to be a good father. You work it out as you go, and most men work it out alone.
This is twelve sessions, two hours each, in a room with other fathers working on the same thing. We run it, you sign up yourself, and it costs you nothing. The curriculum is 24/7 Dad®.
You do not have to have anything figured out before you come. Bring the questions you have not asked anyone.
What the Twelve Sessions Cover
Twelve sessions, two hours each, in a group with other fathers, facilitated by Families First Center. The curriculum is 24/7 Dad®, developed by National Fatherhood Initiative and used by fatherhood programs across the country.
It is not twelve weeks of being told what you are doing wrong. Some of it is the practical side of raising a child. The rest is what usually goes unsaid: what you were taught a man is supposed to be, how you handle your own anger and stress, and what you want to be like as a father.
Here is what the sessions cover.
- Discipline. What you are trying to teach, and what rewards and punishment actually do.
- What it means to be a man. Masculinity, body image, and where your idea of what a man is came from.
- Children’s growth. How children develop, and how a child builds a sense of their own worth.
- Feelings. Showing feelings, handling them, and grief.
- Getting involved. Practical involvement, including at your child’s school.
- Men’s health. Stress, anger, and physical health.
- Co-parenting. Working with the child’s mother, including when you disagree.
- Communication. With your children, and with everyone else raising them.
- Dads and work. Work and family, and the pull between them.
- The father’s role. What the role is, and what you want it to be.
Fathers. You do not need a reason to be here beyond wanting to be better at it.
